Completed Hybrid Sign Process Posters – 2/27/25

I now finished making all 9 of my Hybrid Sign Process Posters. Not much has changed aside from thinner dotted lines and a thicker color bar.

My next move is to bring these signs to life. I'll continue thinking about ways I can do this over the weekend.

close ups

I made wide close ups to add more variety to my show layout and introduce close ups with descriptions of the flowers.

More on nourishment and some thoughts

I thought about the work that I have done so far since last semester to now. Although my work is varied, and seemingly un connected I feel like there has been an underlying thread this whole time. I started by thinking about design psychology and over time that initial thought has changed and evolved into becoming something different. From exploring random objects, to focusing on sequences, to how a simple object can be interpreted or used for something besides its innate function, a couple of things have remained a constant over this time. I have explored color, using vibrant and bold color combinations throughout most of my work, which was initially done to get me out of my own comfort zone, but also to challenge the notion that things had to be a certain color to represent something.

From a more rooted perspective however, I have been trying to give the objects I've been working with meaning, and tie meaning to the thoughts and conclusions I have made through the continued use of one object. A little while back I categorized the spoon as a means of measurement, privilege, and nourishment, since then I have been trying to connect back to those categorizations, mainly nourishment.

Earlier in the week I was feeling stuck, and experimented within nourishment using simple shapes and colors to try and convey a feeling of a certain type of nourishment that we as humans need. I didn't have quite a clear connection back to the original type of nourishment, but I did have a connection to how I felt about the pieces and the colors I used in order to try and convey what I had originally intended.

I plan on doing the same experiments for the remaining sections of nourishment, like I have done for kindness, which is often associated with light blues, purples, warm yellows, and pinks, as well as circles for their round and uniform shape, and triangles as each side relies on another for its structural integrity. I think that in trying to make a connection to nourishment to connect my work and give it meaning, I have found another device in which to tie my pieces together. If I maintain a strong use of color, tying it to color theory in these later parts, as well as write about how simple shapes and color are related to each other in the sense of a broader theme, I can connect not only the work I continue to do but have already done.

02/27 The Value of Attention & Your Attention to Value

I created various trial sizes of the "receipt tags" before deciding on the most desirable result.

In this process, I started thinking about how many I could really amass/produce. Some array of a few dozen gets the point across plenty, but I wondered if that was really the sweet spot. What if I created hundreds? Thousands?!?

I started hanging them on the wall for comparison at a distance, and together they sort of stood out like representations of different individuals. So, with a high volume, and perhaps a diverse rhythm of sizes (and shapes?), I could represent a community of human individuals.

The representation could vary between the price of attention and/or personal information, a record of stimuli transaction, or even the price of minds/ideas (which is reeaaallly interesting in contemporary space for ARTISTS (producers)). So if there are like 400-500 people currently in the Montserrat space, I could (in theory) represent the whole of our current community in an array of these tags.

Anyways... Tags!

Near Future: Thinking about designing that typeface I started developing it into something usable. Then, I'd set it with some sort of verbage, and print that on the backs of, or another piece of paper and attached to, the tags. (read that 10x fast!)

Additional Revisions to the Hybrid Sign Process Posters (+2 New Posters) – 2/26/25

Today, I went back and made the revisions to the Hybrid Sign Process posters that we discussed last class. I reduced the size of the headlines and made sure the colors matched with the selected sign solution. I also loosened up the spacing in between everything and increased the size of the dotted lines. In addition, I made two more posters so you can see how my system works. I plan to finish the remaining four posters over the weekend.

Zine Data

I set up an excel sheet to collect the data from my zine survey. This is where I will enter all the info from the zines, this makes it easier to see trends in data when I eventually run it through AI. From the 105 zines I put out I got 10 back... I collected the zines from the hallway and I have 50 in total.

A manual on how to think

moving away from posters for now, I wanted to continue working with the idea of exploring the spaces I tend to do most of my reflection and critical thinking about my work. I pivoted to a book format to hold my ideas about this topic and collect assets. I want to create a user manual to my thinking process in a way. I plan on moving to posters once I have enough stuff to work with. Below are the spaces I will be focusing on and what they represent.

Below are spreads of abstracted visuals from my room. Exploring using text and just the visuals, also exploring different color palettes.

Bedroom
- Reflection (mirror and personal, ritual)
- Rest (bed, lounging, procrastinating)
- Sleep (reset, routine, comfort)
- Dreams (subconscious, association, intuition, grey area reasoning)
- Value (Memories, relationships, stories, personal belongings)
- Aesthetic (One room I have complete control of)

Car
- Freedom
- Alert of surroundings
- Routine
- Discovery
- Direction
- Independence
- Pride
- Responsibility

Seminar
- Thoughtful
- Motivated
- Routine
- Resources
- Quiet

Walking my dog
- Wondering
- Reflection
- Loops

Bathroom
- Reflection
- Cleanse
- Routine
- Relaxing

Just trying this.

New Flower Images with Warning Labels

I created new images for lily of the valley and monkshood so it wasn't the same image every time. I also made the warning label for the 2 as well as revised the foxglove one.

looking more into nourishment

I looked at the categories I have determined prior, I tried looking at the categories as a whole without moving through it like a list, and honestly felt a little stuck. Trying to get out of the funk I tried returning to language by looking at poetry. I wanted to take a bit of a break from the poetry I had previously collected to see if different poetry would spark some new ideas. In the end it managed to spark some ideas, but I still felt a little lost.

I started working with abstract visuals and just placing things on the page, using source materials, and then moving further and further away from them until they were no longer included in the imagery at all. I find that this is how I best work through any ruts I find myself in. I wanted to remain abstract in the visual work I was creating, and thought about the colors I had assigned to the categories at the start.

I did some more thought and looking into what the colors I could use could mean in from a psychological stand point. I ended up working in a relatively warm color pallet, despite working in different categories. I chose reds, and oranges that were more similar to each other for the love and relationships aspects, as those colors for me represented love and being similar in tone and not being super vibrant felt more in line with how I view love and relationships. These colors are often also associated with romance.

Then for learning and development I had to do a little more digging. I found that orange can be associated with supporting enthusiasm and engagement, red often represented energy, and yellow encouraged creativity, optimism, and curiosity. To me these colors in order to represent this category fully needed to be more vibrant than the others in order to stand apart from love and relationships, but also to more accurately represent learning and development.
