My senior thesis concept is to do a study and exploration of different eras of design through the history of the computer and internet. I would like to look into the designs of various operating systems’ GUIs as well as common website design aesthetics through the years.
I will start by doing research on the timeline of the computer to understand the scope of the project, and create a visual timeline and moodboard for each era. I will then research further into each era and make notes of the design choices made, as well as any technical limitations of the era. For each era I would like to create mockups, likely in Figma or Dreamweaver, but possibly other softwares as well, of some staples of the GUIs from each era and incorporate websites from each era as well.
For the final piece I would like to create a website with different themes that can be switched to emulate the different eras of computer and internet history. I am thinking of having the website contain research on the eras, as well as possibly having some kind of portfolio section for more of my work.
